How to extend the life of your Generator Set
Generator sets can be used for so many years when the maintenance culture adopted for the product meets the required standard of the manufacturer. Generators need to be maintained to keep them running efficiently. A generator can be used for a long time before if gets destroyed. It can also be used for a short while and get damaged it depends on the users attitude towards maintaining the generator. See how you can extend the life of your generator set below;
Change engine oil regularly:
The engine oil in the generator is used for greasing and lubricating the piston and rings efficiently while the engine runs. The Engine oil becomes due for change when it is too light to grease up the piston, rings and other parts of the generator. When the oil becomes light it also gets short sometimes which reduces the functionality of the generator. The generator comes with a user manual to guide users on how often the oil should be changed. These instructions must be strictly adhered to as the manufacturer knows the product more than the user. It is important to change the engine oil regularly and also monitor the gauge subsequently.
Use High Quality Engine Oil:
Change the engine oil of the generator is very important. The engine oil to be used will determine how long the generator will last before it will spoil the rings, start smoking and eventually weaken the housing of the generator. Trusted High quality Engine oil should be used for generators as this will help to keep the engines running as new.
Change plugs when the Head Loses Spark Strength:
Spark plugs help to start the generator and keep the motor running. The plug gets weaker after long spark cycles. The plug accumulates carbon and sometimes loses some layers of the head. This weakens and eventually destroys the plug. Some Generators with sound engine accommodate weak plugs better. The plugs should be changed as recommended by the manufacturer to keep the engine strong.
Keep generator in Dry Place:
Keeping the Generator set in the rain can reduce the life span drastically. The subsequent exposure to rain and sun will cause the beauty of the generator to reduce. Rain sometimes gets into wrong parts of the generator which can ignite a spark and cause fire or start shocking. The rain water can also mix up with the petrol in the tank and ruin the carburetor of the generator. Keeping the generator in a cool dry place will preserve the life.
Service Generator Engine Bi-Annually:
Generators should be subjected to comprehensive serve at least twice in a year or more depending on how much work it is used for. The generator accumulated carbon on the surface and the valve compartments over time. This reduces the efficiency of the generator. The servicing will help to get rid of carbon and on the generator set. This should be done by an experienced mechanical engineer.
Clean Carburetors:
Generator run out of petrol and die eventually when they are being used. Whenever this happens, the carburetor is exposed to dirt. This dirt settles in the area that supplies fuel and will eventually affect fuel supply. This will cause the generator to sometimes go off while it is working or possibly consume more fuel as its work is not balanced and it is struggling to work.
Keep Oil Switch Connected:
The oil switch on the generator is used to cut off the fuel supply to make sure the generator goes off if the oil is too light or short. This oil switch is very important and can help a user to avoid a knocked engine when something goes wrong with the oil. Oil seals sometimes get cut or broken which can lead to shortage of oil. The oil switch will cut off fuel supply when this kind of fault is detected. It is therefore very important to make sure that the oil switch is rightly connected and is working to keep the necessary indicators in check.
Avoid Overloading the Generator:
Every generator comes with a maximum output specification. Users are always encouraged to use below the maximum output. Under loading the generator set and moderately loading it will elongate the life of the generator.
